Mods

Ninja is an extension to Gothic that allows the use of modular patches or more generally: mods. It fulfils one specific purpose: it removes the limitations of Gothic, allowing you to play with multiple mods at the same time.

The most well-known Ninja patch is Free Aiming, similar to the aiming from Gothic 3. There are also other patches that have no equivalent in Union, which is a reason to use Ninja.

Free Aiming, Compass, AutoRun…

Free Aiming is already present in some mods, but it can also be installed into other mods – due to its modularity. Yesterday, the Reusable Arrows patch was also published, which ensures that fired bolts and arrows remain in the game world, and if they hit a character or monster, they stay in their inventory.

Another useful patch – especially when playing new modifications – is Compass. As the name suggests, it adds a compass to indicate direction.

In addition to these, other useful patches using Ninja, for example, are: AutoRun – which allows automatic running, AutoSave – for automatic saving on any number of slots or KeepTraderWeapons thanks to which traders do not carry weapons that we could buy.

Ninja and Union

Ninja is Union compatible from version 1.0e onwards, as well as being able to run without it. What is the difference between the two?

Union

  • enables the correct running of games from the Gothic series on modern computers and systems
  • fixes game engine errors
  • allows the creation and use of new mechanics (plugins)

Ninja

  • removes Gothic’s limitations to allow modular mods (containing new items, characters, dialogues, mechanics, etc.).

The main limitation of Gothic was the scripts. It is in them that characters, items, dialogues or mechanics are contained. Thanks to Ninja – already in 2018 – it has become possible to play more than one modification at the same time – even if they all contain their own scripts.

Ninja doesn’t add anything. All that is possible with Ninja is simply Gothic itself. Admittedly, the Ninja extension includes the latest version of the Ikarus and LeGo packages, but it is already up to the developer of the patch to use them.

Origin of the name

As the author of the extension – mud-freak – explains it, he gave it the name Ninja because it injects content into Gothic in a light-weight, minimalistic way and if you don’t know how to use it, you will kill (=crash) Gothic. But if used correctly, you and Gothic don’t know that it was ever there.

Installation

Steam

  • Subscribe Ninja in Steam Workshop (Gothic 1, Gothic 2).
  • Subscribe a given patch in Steam Workshop as well.

Manual installation

  • Ninja is compatible with Gothic, Gothic Sequel, Gothic 2 and Gothic 2 Night of the Raven. Requires only installation:
GothicGothic SequelGothic 2 (Classic)Gothic 2 Night of the Raven
Version 1.08k_modVersion 1.12fReport version 1.30.0.0Report version 2.6.0.0
  • Then you have to download and install the newest .exe file with Ninja.
  • Unpack a .vdf file with a given patch.

Spine

Search and install Ninja in the Database.

Post Scriptum – SystemPack

Although Ninja itself does not require the installation of SystemPack, it is needed to play Gothic on modern systems. The SP is already included in Union or can also be installed separately.

List of patches

I have prepared a list of patches that meet a total of 3 conditions:

  • they have a English translation or do not require one
  • they most likely do not have an equivalent (plugin) using Union
  • no account is required to download them

I found all of the following originally on the World of Gothic website. They are also published on, among others:

Name:Source:Author:Description:
AutoRun – run like in MMORPGWorld of GothicneocromiconAutomatic running at the press of a key. You can rotate the character to steer it.

Default keys: U, Y.
AutoSaveGitHubmud-freakAutomatic game saving. After the first launch, in the gothic.ini file you can select the slots where the game will be automatically saved, as well as every how many minutes.

In addition, you can block automatic saving during combat or being chased by an opponent.
BetterOrcSlayerWorld of GothickiridesThe weapon “Orc Slayer” deals 15% more damage against orcs.
BloodsplatsGitHubmud-freakBloodstains appear on the screen when receiving damage. Their intensity is dependent on the number of hitpoints lost.

Some modifications already have this implemented.
Bonus Independent TrainingGitHubelsky42Bonuses from potions/food etc. no longer count towards the learning thresholds. As a result, they can be used immediately.

Works with the original Gothic 2 Night of the Raven and modifications that do not interfere with the learning system.
Cinema ScopeWorld of GothicneocromiconIt extends the dialogue bars to the full screen, similar to what is implemented in Risen.
CompassGitHubmud-freak & FeuerbardeAdds a nice compass to the game.
Infinite SprintWorld of GothicneocromiconAllows for non-stop sprinting, including in companions.

You can set whether strength will be required for this, and whether weapons and magic can be used while sprinting.
Ore ArmorWorld of Gothicmud-freakAllows you to insert the Ancient Ore Armor from Gothic I in Gothic II using the console.

Code: ore_armor_en
Free AimingGitHubmud-freakAllows free-aiming with ranged weapons and magic. Two modes are available: “Balanced” and “Realistic”.

In some modifications, free-aiming is already implemented.

When you run the game with this patch for the first time, you will find more parameters for configuration in the ‘System.ini’ file.
ChangeGangartWorld of GothicBloodfly91Allows you to change the walk animation with a key.

Default keys: I, U.
KeepTraderWeaponsGitHubmud-freakFixes the bug with the automatic equipping of the best to carry weapons by traders.
With this patch you will be able to buy and sell them without worry.
NoUnderwaterGitHubmud-freakRemove the underwater effect. Both visual and audible (sound suppression). Facilitates underwater exploration.
FirstMageKitGitHubmud-freakAdds two spells to the game: Unlock and Mana surge.

The first spell is available from scroll merchants and also from chests. The second, as a rune, is available from the installation of the patch. The rune requires a 3rd magic circle.
PatchMenuWorld of GothicneocromiconAdds a new menu option.

Of the patches listed here, it is required for:
1. InfiniteSprint
2. SAIS
PercentPotionsWorld of GothicKiridesPotions increase health and mana by percentage rather than by a fixed number of points.

When you first start the game with this patch, you can adjust the thresholds using the file “System\gothic.ini”.
ReusableArrowsGitHubmud-freakAllows the collection of arrows fired. If they hit an opponent, they can be collected from their inventory.

Requires the aforementioned Free Aiming.
SAISWorld of GothicneocromiconDisplays on screen:
– hero level
– learning points
– required experience for the next level
– amount of gold/magic ore
– amount of arrows/bolts
– amount of scrolls
– game time
– hitpoints/mana

In the form of icons or text. Requires the installation of PatchMenu, with which you can configure how the statistics are displayed.
StaminaGitHubmud-freakIt introduces a breath-based stamina system, which by default can be seen in the yellow bar underwater.

Hits require stamina, as does the added in it sprinting with the V key or dot.

The system can be further configured in the “System\gothic.ini” file when the game is first launched with the patch.

Some modifications already implement stamina systems.
